Supermarket giant Tesco has announced plans to boost its presence in Japan by acquiring a neighbourhood fresh food chain.

Tesco's Japanese subsidiary C2 - which already controls 77 stores - said it hoped to buy Fre'c in return for taking on 3 billion yen (pounds 16m) of the group's debt.
