THE origins of Greenwich Mean Time lie in the decision by Charles II to set up an astronomical observatory in 1675 on land he owned.

It could have been any number of royal sites. But he chose Greenwich. Astronomers at Greenwich had high precision, expensive telescopes on firm foundations with which to fix time accurately by the stars.
