ATTEMPTS by mining giant Xstrata to join forces with Anglo American in the creation of a new mining super-major have ended in failure.

Xstrata had sought an all-share tie-up with Anglo in a deal which would have created a combined business with a market value of pounds 60bn. Anglo rejected an initial approach in June and Xstrata said that while it will now not make an offer, it believes the rationale for a deal is "undiminished".
