THE quest for Labour party power began yesterday as David Miliband confirmed politics' worst kept secret. The South Shields MP is bidding to eventually be the next prime minister from the North East as he announced he would be running as a candidate in the Labour leadership battle.

Mr Miliband, who worked as an adviser for Tony Blair in Downing Street, faces a fight for the role as Labour agrees to avoid another "coronation ceremony" similar to that which saw Gordon Brown take over from Tony Blair in 2007 without a real challenge.
