Traffic should be flowing freely again within weeks on a controversial stretch of the A1 in Northumberland as a pounds 5.6m project to eliminate a major accident blackspot reaches a significant milestone.

A road tunnel has now been completed to take local traffic underneath the killer A1 Stannington bypass near Morpeth and eliminate a series of highly-dangerous junctions on the main road which have been the scene of numerous fatal and serious accidents.
