Summary
WHILE not wishing to get involved in the altercation between Bernard Garner, director general of Nexus, and Gillian Swanson over whether the Metro is being privatised or modernised (Voice of the North, July 6, 8 & 11), may I point out that it is a requirement of European Union competition law that all public sector contracts over a certain amount are subject to a tendering process? It has nothing to do with giving best value to both taxpayers and passengers, as claimed by Mr Garner.
This is why the Government can't just give the pounds 300m to Nexus to improve and extend the service.See the full content of this document
