NEWCASTLE Building Society has seen its finances drop pounds 4.9m into the red in the first six months of this year after its income fell by a third.

The society blamed low interest rates for its revenues falling from pounds 24.5m last year to pounds 18.4m but its bottom line was dragged down from a pounds 700,000 profit a year ago after a pounds 4m hit from a restructuring which included job cuts.
