NOW is the season for leek shows and all other manner of flower and vegetable competitions, hosted by pubs, clubs, and village halls. And as I wander past the displays, I never cease to be amazed by the loving care that has been lavished on this farm, garden and allotment bounty.

The start of such shows goes hand in hand with the onset of autumn, which signals the harvest of much of this bounty and the first ploughing - all part of the rich weave and weft of what's left of our traditional farming scene.
