In June, a Department of Transport study claimed that speed cameras were saving "100 lives a year".

A three-year study of accident rates on Britain's roads with cameras showed a 40pc cut in the number of people killed or seriously injured. Prime Minister Tony Blair and Transport Secretary Alistair Darling pounced on the figures as proof that cameras were working.
