A key theme of the recent British Chambers of Commerce (BCC) conference was the continuing burden of regulation on small businesses.

Isabella Moore, BCC president, made reducing the regulatory burden a central theme of her speech after BCC figures revealed that the cost to businesses of regulations introduced since 1997 has rocketed to pounds 30bn, a rise of 46 pc. In 2003 British business was faced with the bill for an extra pounds 9bn.
