Born Ronald Parkinson Smith in 1913, Norman Parkinson adopted his new moniker at the age of 21, observing that it was unthinkable to craft a high-flying career in photography with the name, 'Smith'.

Standing 6ft 5ins tall, Parkinson was unable to cut an anonymous figure behind the camera, so instead adopted an alter ego, 'Parks'.
