Department store chain John Lewis has revealed sales fell 11.7% last week as shoppers stayed at home in the wake of the London terrorist attacks.

All 26 stores in the estate, including the former Bainbridge store in Newcastle, saw sales decline on the same period last year, although the earlier timing of the group's clearance sale distorted the picture. Sales at the group's Oxford Street outlet were 27.7% lower in the week to last Saturday, while protests at the G8 summit left sales in Edinburgh 32.8% lower.
