APLANT which was once killed as a weed could soon be farmed in the UK as a novel crop because it is rich in the essential fatty acid omega-3. Corn gromwell, which was previously best known as a common weed in spring cereal crops, could now be grown commercially after Defrabacked research identified its beneficial qualities.

Essential fatty acids, usually found in fish oils, cannot be made in the body but are needed to support the nervous, cardiovascular and immune systems.
