Couples living together without getting married may not be aware that the law relating to property owned by cohabiting partners is different to that relating to married couples.

Mark Warcup, from law firm Smithson Clarke, says: "Joint ownership is not enough to ensure a simple 50/50 split of the property, as a landmark ruling by the House of Lords has just proved.
