A mother was spared jail yesterday despite an "appalling" record for failing to send her teenage children to school.

District Judge David Woods told Christine Davison she was very close to being jailed for allowing her son and daughter, Jason and Sarah, to skip lessons at Pelton Roseberry Sports and Community College at Chester-le-Street, County Durham.
