AN inspirational music teacher's job has been saved thanks to an online campaign by his students. Hundreds of people rushed to back the petition lodged with Northumberland County Council after management restructuring within the Centre for Creative and Performing Arts saw Dave Hignett's role as team leader earmarked for redundancy. And in a surprise U-turn the council have offered to keep the experienced trumpet player on, much to the relief of the father-of-two who was facing an uncertain future.

The 48-year-old, of Hexham, Northumberland, said: "There were rumblings in the office last week and then I got called in and offered a different job. I was told that it was nothing to do with all the press but they were already looking at ways to save me anyway."
