The range of ivies now available makes this one of the most useful and attractive climbing plants, with leaves of many shapes and sizes as well as yellow, white and pale green variegations. Ivies are hardy and evergreen, qualities that are most appreciated in winter.
The Egyptians and the Romans used ivy for decorations and celebrations and, in medieval England, holly and ivy were once seen as fertility symbols, ivy the female element and holly the male. In those days a clump of ivy on a stake signified an inn. These 'alestakes' sometimes stuck out so far that they knocked passing riders off their horses.
