Life insurer Friends Provident stuck by hopes for another record year yesterday after its first sales figures of 2004 matched those of a year earlier.

The group said life and pensions new business sales on the industry's APE measure - featuring all regular premiums and 10pc of single premiums - was maintained at 2003's level of pounds 92m.
