Summary

CHRIS Hughton revealed he has got the best out of Jons Gutirrez by dropping him, but insisted captain Kevin Nolan did not suffer the same fate on Saturday. Nolan was notable by his absence as Peter Lvenkrands was selected in a slightly more positive version of the Magpies' 4-4-1-1 formation. But it took an inspirational performance from Gutirrez for Newcastle to come from 2-0 down to snatch a first point against Wigan Athletic.

Hughton's post-match explanation of Nolan's absence from the matchday 16 was slightly muddied - perhaps because of the modern fondness for using "rested" as a euphemism for "dropped" - but made it clear it was based on an ankle injury, while hinting Nolan might have considered himself fit. "He is someone who has been playing with a couple of knocks," said the manager. "It was my decision to rest him and give him that extra time."
