IN the 60s it was a familiar sight around the streets of Spennymoor - so much so that miner turned artist Norman Cornish captured it on canvas. Berriman's horse-drawn chip van, which sold chips and fish cakes, was as much a feature of life in his home town as the pitmen who were his usual subjects.

Originally run by George Kirtley, known as Chip Van Geordie, from 1923 and sold to Doug Berriman 12 years later, it was finally bought by Beamish Museum in 1970, standing in storage at the open-air museum until its recent renovation.
