A YOUNG gardener who put down roots in Northumberland after working as a horticultural instructor in Sussex has fulfilled his ambition of opening his own plant nursery.

Robert O'Rourke, who has contributed to gold medal winning exhibits at the Royal Horticultural Society's Chelsea and Hampton Court Palace Flower Shows, launched Northumberland Nurseries in Wooler last Saturday. The 27-year-old, who studied at Hadlow College in Kent and worked as an instructor at Plumpton College, came to the region three years ago to manage a garden centre just over the border in Kelso.
