THE Prime Minister yesterday backed plans to build the North- East's economy around hi-tech businesses, despite experts' warnings that it represents a "high-risk" strategy.

Tony Blair told the North-East Economic Forum, at the Hardwick Hall Hotel, Sedgefield, that "knowledge-based" businesses and science investment are vital to enable the region to compete in future.
