Summary

England international Faye Sanderson yesterday became the only North-East golfer to reach today's closing day of the Northern Ladies Championship in controversial circumstances at Arcot Hall. The Heworth golfer's first round opponent, Kaye Orme from Lancashire, was 15 minutes late for their 9am tee-off time ( an offence which under the rules should have brought disqualification. Orme had been delayed in traffic, not to be unexpected at that time of day as Arcot is seven miles from Newcastle. But she was excused because of "exceptional circumstances". Sanderson had arrived at 8am, in good time for a 40-minute warm-up, but the match eventually teed off over half an hour late. Said Sanderson: "I was quite mad but I birdied the first two holes and everything was fine after that. So it was a case of all's well that ended well." Sanderson won 5&4 and hit even better form in then beating Kate Whitmore from Cheshire 5&3. Today's semi-finals start at 8.45 am (prompt!) with the final scheduled for 1.30pm.
