ACHARITY providing meals for vulnerable people in Newcastle has been forced to close its doors for the first time in 26 years after it suffered storm damage.

The People's Kitchen has fed the needy in the city for more than a quarter of a century. But after a ceiling collapsed onto pounds 70,000 new kitchen equipment that had just been fitted after a nine- month fundraising campaign, it has had to close temporarily. The kitchen, on Bath Lane, closed on Thursday after high winds brought masonry down, causing the damage. Bosses told how they had the devastating task of turning over 100 people away for the first ever time.
