IT could just be the cynic in me, but the timing of Sunderland's arrival in Galway seems a remarkable coincidence. The Black Cats entourage arrived in the city yesterday morning, thereby missing the Galway Arts Festival which ended on Sunday. But racehorse enthusiast and owner Niall Quinn will have consoled himself with the knowledge he was in town for the second day of the Galway races festival. That was not good news for fans, who cannot get a room for the night in Galway for love nor money right now - unless it is very big money. Rumour has it some hoteliers have been secretly holding back rooms to sell on for 500 euros a night this week and undercover tax officials are currently hard at work exposing what has become an annual scam.

IF Sunderland's supporters have been exploited in Galway, at least local council workers have been able to join them in cashing in. Last week a strike by 500 Galway City Council employees was averted after management agreed to give them two half-days during the Ballybrit horse racing festival.
