Summary
THIS year's wet summer has had a serious effect on the hill farmers' forage crop. Many were about a month behind making their silage, and because they had to cut the grass later in the summer it means that they are running out of grass now. Also, all the rain meant that they couldn't make as much hay and there are fears that they may run short if they can't sell any of their animals and have to feed them all over the winter.
Philip Ballantyne, from Cawburn Rigg, near Haltwhistle, produces breeding ewes and store lambs for the autumn sales. He doesn't really have the facilities to fatten the animals and relies on selling them to lowland farmers, who will finish the animals for the primestock market.See the full content of this document
