Expert hydrologists are being brought in by Britain's biggest coal company to provide advice on tackling a severe flooding problem which has brought the region's last deep mine to a standstill.

Coal output has now been halted at 400-man Ellington Colliery in Northumberland for a week since huge volumes of water penetrated the pit's only production face.
