The former boss of Aer Lingus, Willie Walsh, will be the next chief executive of British Airways when the current chief executive Rod Eddington takes retirement in September.

BA chairman Martin Broughton said Mr Eddington had "performed miracles" at the airline, which employs more than 1,000 people in Newcastle, and had "transformed our business beyond recognition".
