NEWCASTLE United will have fans on their next board - if Mike Ashley's successors have any commonsense - according to Kevin Rye, a spokesman for Supporters Direct, writes STUART RAYNER. The Government set up Supporters Direct to help win fans greater accountability and representation at sports clubs. Aylesbury United, Brentford, Cambridge City, Ebbsfleet United, Enfield Town, Exeter City, Runcorn Linnets, Scarborough Athletic, FC United of Manchester and AFCs Liverpool, Telford and Wimbledon are all supporter-owned as a result.

If Newcastle United Supporters Trust is to achieve its aims, it will be with Supporters Direct's help.
