MOTORISTS can cut fuel bills by the equivalent of 70p a gallon just by driving economically. That's what this year's MPG Marathon proved with the 28 cars recording an average 15 per cent improvement in fuel consumption.

The winning car - a smart fortwo - managed a 96.8mpg over the 355- mile route while a highperformance Mazda3 MPS clocked up 41.7, a 43.4 per cent improvement over the official average figure.
