EMBEDDED in the inside of the Norman tower of the Parish Church of St Mary the Virgin at Ponteland is a small grave marker stone - all that remains of the earlier Saxon building.

Visitors enter the church through a tunnel-vaulted porch probably dating from the late 13th Century.
