Summary
DERRICK Bird killed 12 people in three hours before killing himself. His victims were scattered across West Cumbria as he criss- crossed the countryside, first settling scores and then killing willy-nilly.
The police marshaled all their forces but Bird was a taxi driver. He knew every back road, every short cut. It was easy for him to elude them. They did their best to send someone to all 30 reported crime scenes and yet there were complaints that dead bodies were left in place for hours. Have they never heard of forensic examination before a crime scene is disturbed and where did they think any force could instantly find 30 forensic teams? The cordite had not cleared before the carping began. Name me the force which has the resources to deal immediately with 12 almost simultaneous murders or find a gunman in a maze of open country. If any force had asked to be equipped to deal instantly with such a rare occurrence wouldn"t we have howled protest that its resources were idle 99.9% of the time? What happened in Cumbria was monstrous but surely we should concentrate on helping a county, battered by floods, mourning the deaths of schoolchildren and now faced with mayhem.See the full content of this document
