AN ambulance crew took 15 minutes to reach a schoolboy choking to death on a pen top - while para-medics just three miles from the scene took a meal break.

The North-East Ambulance Service (NEAS) despatched a crew from Stanley - 10 miles from Ben Stirland's home in Consett Road, Castleside, County Durham - after failing to inform the crew at Consett Ambulance Station, just three miles down the road, about the incident because they were having a break.
