IN 1930 it was Mahatma Gandhi, in 1949 Winston Churchill and in 1980, Ronald Reagan. Time Magazine's Person of the Year has, since 1927, recorded the person the American publication feel has made the greatest contribution to world affairs.

Over the years, the great and good have been honoured, alongside entries for the American Fighting Man (1950), Baby Boomers (1966) and even the computer (1982).
