Summary
Prudhoe's James Curry was in with a chance of winning the English Boys Championship at Sherwood Forest until he incurred a four-shot penalty in the third round for using a caddy over the age of 18. After opening with 72 67 James started the round sharing second place, but slumped to an 80 before another 72 gave him a 291 total and 33rd place. "I fell to bits after I found out", said Curry, who had veteran Prudhoe member Bob Lawrence on his bag. Curry, normally noted for keeping his cool, added: "It was a big shock. My head went down and I made loads of mistakes." Northumberland and Durham had two golfers in the junior major, which attracts worldwide entries, both from Prudhoe, with Stocksfield old boy Danny Shevill finishing 44th on 297.
