LONG before England's lack of strength in depth was left horribly exposed in South Africa Premier League chairman, perhaps sensing which way the wind was blowing, voted to introduce new rules governing squad size from the start of this season.

It is a move which flies in the face of the normally self- serving motives of those who run top-flight clubs - so altruistic you almost have to pinch yourself to believe it ever went through a board meeting.
