Thousands of pounds of public money pledged to help revive a North tourist railway should have been used to pay off its debts, it was claimed last night.

The call was made by Durham county councillor John Shuttleworth after last week's announcement by regional development agency One NorthEast that it would invest more money in Weardale Railway.
