What is democracy? My dictionary describes it as, "government by all the people, usually through elected representatives". I wonder, has anyone considered how difficult this idea of democracy can be in practice?

How would one elected representative hope to accurately represent, possibly many thousand individual views?

In reality, common sense would have to prevail and the elected representative would have to abide by the majority decision. Even this approach has problems though, how would someone go about establishing exactly what the majority view was?
