Chancellor Gordon Brown has designated Newcastle a Science City in recognition of its remarkable achievements in science and technology, particularly in stem cell research and bio-molecular sciences. It is one of six in the country, but what sets Newcastle apart is a very strong focus on education and skills.
At the launch of Science Cities, Lord Sainsbury, the Minister for Science and Innovation, said: "The Government is committed to making the UK the best place in the world for science. UK science and innovation are key to meeting the challenges of an increasingly competitive global knowledge economy.
