A school facing closure, and whose children could be sent to a neighbouring village for classes, has been named one of the best in Britain for sports, dance and gymnastics.

Swarland First School was presented with a Sport England Gold Active award for outstanding achievements in physical education, and now joins an elite group of high-flying centres nationally. The 90- pupil school, near Alnwick, Northumberland, is only the 128th in the country to receive the accolade, which takes into consideration staff and parent input, enjoyment and working with the community, as well as involvement in external sporting activities.
