The Financial Ombudsman Service is bracing itself to handle a record volume of complaints during the coming year as increasing numbers of people contact it about alleged endowment mis-selling.

The service, which resolves disputes between consumers and financial services firms, predicted it would have seen a 28% rise in the number of complaints it had resolved during the year to the end of March.
