An elm tree which has stood in Newcastle city centre grounds for more than a century was felled yesterday because of Dutch elm disease.

The 40ft tree near the Civic Centre is the last of the elms planted in the grounds of the adjacent St Thomas the Martyr Church. The elm is being replaced with a hornbeam.
