EFFORTS to boost Newcastle's early evening economy have netted an extra pounds 53.1m of business in just six months and helped city centre traders to buck the national trend.

The Alive After Five initiative kicked off last October to tackle tough trading conditions with shops opening until 8pm and free parking in councilowned multi-storeys after 5pm.
