IT was a case of almost but not quite for South North as Chester- le-Street overcame the weather and their opponents to win from the penultimate ball of both the match and the season to retain the Dukes North East Premier League championship.

Seven games ago the title race looked done and dusted with the Cestrians 45 points ahead, but a tremendous run of victories for the Bulls gradually brought the deficit down. And with South North picking up the maximum 30 points from their win at Newcastle on Saturday, it took the dramatic finale at Ropery Lane to secure the crown by a nine point margin.
