In reply to E. Richards (Voice of the North, June 21) I ask what a human life is worth, and whether the life of an "anonymous" road casualty ( or, indeed, an unknown Iraqi civilian killed by a coalition air raid ( is worth any less than the lives of Jessica and Holly, the two murdered Soham girls.

Are we in danger of accepting "ghettoes" ( such as the roads or the "binge-drinking" areas of our cities ( in which death, injury and violence become more "acceptable," with the victims themselves being blamed for being present in former public spaces which have become "no-go" areas for the exclusive use of speeders or violently- drunk revellers?

Cameras Worth Installing Even If They Save One Priceless Life

My then "next-of-kin" was killed outright 23 years ago on overtaking straight into the path of an oncoming stock wagon.

This left a little girl of 12 without a parent. Since each human life is unique I refuse to bargain lives against statistics ( I regard speed cameras as worth installing even if they save one, priceless, life.
