SUNDERLAND are attempting to push a deal through for Rennes striker Asamoah Gyan before the close of the transfer window following a frantic couple of days on Wearside, writes LUKE EDWARDS.

Although Black Cats manager Steve Bruce insists he has another two targets in mind, Gyan is the player he has identified as the ideal replacement for Kenwyne Jones following the latter's pounds 8million switch to Stoke City. But the arrival of Gyan - one of the stars of the World Cup in South Africa - is far from certain as the two clubs are still haggling over the asking price and Sunderland have not even managed to discuss personal terms with the 24-year- old.
