Bringing Eu Summit North

The high-powered event, tying in to the United Kingdom's six- month presidency of the European Union, will be televised in 32 countries across Europe and will further highlight Tyneside's presence on the world stage. The conference - won in the face of fierce competition from other UK cities - will be worth pounds 200,000 to the region in hotel stays alone and is expected to generate many millions of pounds more in economic spin-offs.

And last night there was a second boost for the region's economy as the prestigious 254-room Newcastle Gateshead Hilton - after months of controversial delays and building problems - finally announced an opening date for guests.
