Summary

* east Durham and Houghall Community College, based in Peterlee, is home to many of the country's best emerging boxers. Recognised as a centre of excellence by the Amateur Boxing Association of England, the facility has been used as a training base for top amateurs from national teams prior to both the Olympic and Commonwealth Games.

* THE British Boxing Board of Control has overseen the sport since 1929 and the governing body's Northern Area Council is one of the most proactive. Nationally, 2,000 licence holders are affiliated to the BBBC, of which 650 are active boxers. Fewer than 50 earn a full-time living from the sport.
