LIKE everything, the design of our homes and estates goes through phases and fashions. Of course, much depends on central government planning guidance and local planners' interpretations and ideals.

Thank heavens we seem to be experiencing a time of "homes for real people", with concern for spaces and places where young and old, singles and families can live together in well thought-out zones. As I write the word "zones", I think of something regimented and unnatural.
