Asum of pounds 20m is an awful lot of money to drain from any local economy. Yet that is what the decision to close RAF Boulmer means to the North-East and to Northumberland in particular.

RAF Boulmer has been part of the fabric of North Northumberland for 60 years - the most visible part of the work there being the search and rescue helicopters which are such a common sight in the North's skies.
